EDWARD SIEFERT
MR.SIEFERT GREW UP IN BERVILLE, MICHIGAN AND ATTENDED MEMPHIS AND ALMONT HIGH SCHOOLS. HE WAS A BASEBALL PLAYER.
HE CAME TO NEW HAVE TO TEACH AND COACH IN 1925 AFTER ATTENDING MICHIGAN NORMAL COLLEGE. IN 1929-1931 HE ATTENDED MICHIGAN STATE COLLEGE WHERE HE WAS A VARSITY BASEBALL PLAYER. HE GRADUATED WITH A DEGREE IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING.
HE RETURNED TO NEW HAVEN WHERE HE TAUGHT MATH AND SCIENCE, WAS NAMED PRINCIPAL AND ULTIMATELY SUPERINTENDENT IN 1935. HE COACHED FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL.
DURING THE WAR YEARS MR. SIEFERT WAS THE ONLY MAN TEACHING IN NEW HAVEN. MANY OF THE YOUNG MEN HE COACHED ENTERED THE ARMED SERVICES. IN 1943 ONE OF NEW HAVEN’S BEST BASKETBALL SEASONS WAS CUT SHORT WHEN THREE MEMBERS OF THE TEAM HAD TO LEAVE BEFORE THE QUARTER FINALS FOR MILITARY SERVICE.
MR.SIEFERT WAS VERY INTERESTED IN THE LIVES OF THE YOUNG MEN WHO PARTICIPATED IN SPORTS. HE LOVED SPORTS AND BELIEVED IN THE VALUE OF A QUALITY SPORTS EXPERIENCE AS A PREPARATION FOR LIFE HE TOOK GREAT PRIDE IN THE MANY FINE YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN WHO GRADUATED FROM N.H.H.S.
