LEON CARL

"RED"

LEON “RED” CARL WAS A 1935 GRADUATE OF NEW HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL. AT THE TIME THE ONLY SPORTS AVAILABLE WERE FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL. RED PLAYED ALL THREE SPORTS AT THE VARSITY LEVEL FOR FOUR YEARS. 

DURING THE FOOTBALL SEASON OF 1933, RED STARTED ON OFFENSE AND DEFENSE. WHILE PLAYING HALFBACK, HE HELPED NEW HAVEN SCORE IN NUMEROUS FASHIONS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD. HE RAN FOR TOUCHDOWNS, THREW FOR A TOUCHDOWN AND KICKED EXTRA POINTS. THE “FOUNDRYMEN” AS THE NEW HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS TEAMS WERE KNOWN BACK THEN, SURRENDERED ONLY SIX POINTS AND WON ITS FIRST LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP WITH AN UNDEFEATED SEASON. DURING THE SPORTS YEAR OF 1934-35, RED CARL WAS THE CAPTAIN OF THE FOOTBALL TEAM. THE FOUNDRYMEN NOT ONLY WON THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP BUT DID NOT GIVE UP A SINGLE POINT DURING THE ENTIRE SEASON. RED WAS THE STARTING GUARD FOR THE BASKETBALL TEAM WHICH WON THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP. RED WAS ALSO THE CATCHER FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP BASEBALL TEAM. AFTER GRADUATING IN 1935, RED FAITHFULLY SERVED HIS COUNTRY IN WORLD WAR II.
