JAMES HENRY
A native of Mr. Clemens, James Henry graduated from New Haven High School in 1976. At New Haven, he lettered in baseball, basketball and track and was named All-League, All-County, and All-State.
While at the University of Michigan on a full track scholarship James was a four year Wolverine letter winner. He was the first athlete to jump 25 feet and qualified four times for the NCAA National Championship. James won the 1980 Big Ten long jump title and helped U of M to the 1978 Indoors, 1978 Outdoors, and 1980 Outdoors Big Ten Championships.
After serving three years as the assistant women’s track coach he was promoted to the position of University of Michigan women’s track coach in 1984. Since 1983, he has coached eight Big Ten track and field team titles. Coach Henry was Big Ten Coach of the Year four times and National Coach of the Year in 1994. His professional achievements include 37 individual and 12 relay All-American Citations, 42 Big Ten Titles, 2 NCAA Post-Graduate scholarships and GTE Academic All-American Honors. In addition, 140 Academic All-Big Ten awards have been earned by Michigan Indoor and Outdoor track and field.
Mr. Henry is active in Washtenaw County community organizations. He resides in Ann Arbor with his wife Michelle, daughter Camilla, son James and niece Juanita.
